Justine Makdessi is a Sydney born, Melbourne based artist and writer interested in interrogating how power is distributed in systems that legitimate subjects and self. This entails analyses of the sometimes-abstract fields of power, knowledge and ideology in relation to spatial practices that incorporate modes of understanding, perception and action. With a BVA/BA in Sculpture and Spatial Practice and English Literature and a BFA (first class hons.) from Monash University, Justine’s practice incorporates an approach to text, both written and spoken as material. Justine has shown at Craft Victoria, The Substation and Linden Centre for Contemporary Art as the recipient of the Linden Innovators Award and was included in Documenta13, Kassel, Germany as part of Critical Art Ensemble’s project ‘Winning Hearts and Minds’. As a recipient of the Australian Postgraduate Award Justine is currently undertaking a Masters of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Spatial Practice at Monash University, titled ‘Materiality as Power’s Most Productive Effect’.
